Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
